Making Squares for the Global Warming Quilt

Sometimes I tend to be a perfectionist and this came through when sewing the squares for the Global Warming Quilt. If I had sewn random wedges to the squares I would have lost the grain line on one edge, but that was not on my mind. So I had to think of a method to avoid it and here I am showing what I did. 

Manchmal kommt bei mir der Perfektionist durch und genau das passierte als ich die Quadrate für den Global Warming Quilt nähte. Wenn ich einfach Reststücke an die Quadrate genäht hätte, wäre der Fadenlauf an einer Seite verloren gegangen. Aber das wollte ich nicht. Also musste ich mir eine Methode ausdenken, um das zu vermeiden und hier ist nun zu sehen was ich machte. 
Ich denke, die Bilder sprechen auch ohne Übersetzung für sich.

To make the wedges:
5 inch square, first cut horizontal through the center, then two cuts in random angles.
Each wedge has now one long grain and one long bias.

4 1/2 inch square layed out on the mat with the left bottom corner matching the crossing lines. With a removable pen I marked a line 3/8 inch away from the top edge.

With the grain line on top I layed the wedge along the marked line. Both pieces are right side up. 

Along the bottom edge of the wedge I marked a line on the square.

Wedge sewn to the square with a 1/4 inch seam.

The no longer needed piece got discarded.

Seams pressed open.

Unit trimmed back to the needed size. Here it is a 4 1/2 inch square. 

Voila, it is done, a grain line on all 4 sides. 

Global Warming Quilt

It started with muddy brown colored leftovers from my quilt Evolution and additional bright squares.

Es begann mit verschiedenen braunen Resten von meinem Quilt Evolution und zusätzlich farbenfrohen Quadraten.

Today I could add the quilt to my finished projects. I gave it the title Global Warming. The earthy colors reminded me of the more and more dry grounds, although there are lighter, sometimes green areas, trying to survive. Even plants and flowers want to bloom, but fires are flickering up again to destroy the growing life. This may sound sad, though I enjoyed sewing the quilt. 

Heute konnte ich den Quilt zu den fertigen Projekten geben. Ich gab ihm den Titel Erderwärmung. Die erdigen Farben erinnerten mich an die mehr und mehr trockenen Flächen, obwohl es auch ein paar hellere, manchmal grüne Teile gibt, die ums Überleben kämpfen. Sogar Pflanzen und Blumen wollen blühen, aber es flackern immer wieder Feuerherde auf, die das heranwachsende Leben zerstören. Das klingt vielleicht traurig, trotzdem hatte ich Freude beim Nähen des Quilts.

The first picture is taken with flash. The second without to show the quilting. It's a sun with the rays elongated to the edges. 

Das erste Bild ist mit Blitz aufgenommen. Das zweite Bild ohne, damit man das Quilten sieht. Es ist eine Sonne mit Strahlen, die zum Rand hin verlängert sind.

I am not going to give instructions how to make the quilt, but I'll show you at least how I made the blocks in a next post.

Ich werde keine Anleitung für das Nähen des Quilts geben, aber zumindest auf einer der nächsten Seiten zeigen wie ich die Blöcke gemacht habe.

One Day Mysteryquilt - no longer a Mystery

2 weeks ago I made a Mystery quilt with my quilt buddies. Now the Mystery is revealed and I can puplish the instructions.
Materials needed are:
1 FQ for the background, optional light color, less pattern
1 FQ for the backing, same size batting
4 different colored leftovers, about 6 x 8 inch
Fusible, like Steam a Seam or other brand
4 spools Quilting thread, matching the color of the leftovers
2-3 strips (width of fabric), 2 1/4 inch, or your preferred size for binding
removable marker (airerasable or pilot pen, NOT the blue washout pen)
Acrylic paints or fabric paints, very thin brush, bowl or plate for mixing paint

Vor 2 Wochen nähte ich mit meinen Quiltfreunden einen Mystery Quilt. Nun ist das Geheimnis gelüftet und ich kann die Anleitung veröffentlichen.
Benötigtes Material:
1 FQ für den Hintergrund, bevorzugt helle Farbe mit wenig Muster
1 FQ für die Rückseite, ebenso Vlies
4 verschiedenfarbige Reste, ca. 15 x 20 cm
doppelseitig aufbügelbares Vlies, z.B. Steam a Seam oder eine andere Marke
4 Spulen Quiltfaden, farblich passend zu den Stoffresten
2-3 Streifen von der Stoffbreite, 6cm breit, oder in eurer bevorzugten Breite für die Einfassung
entfernbaren Markierstift, am besten ein Pilotstift, aber auf keinen Fall den blauen auswaschbaren Stift)
Acrylfarben oder Stoffmalfarben, sehr dünner Pinsel, Schale oder Platte zum Mischen der Farben

Iron the fusible to the backside of the leftovers, following the manufacturer's instructions. Cut out a triangle from each piece, any size and angles. Lay them out on the background until you like the arrangement. Take care not to have edges of the triangles going parallel. Remove the paper, if it's still there, and iron the triangles to the background. Make a quiltsandwich with the batting and backing in your preferred method.

Bügle das gummierte Vlies auf die Rückseite der Reste so wie es der Erzeuger vorgegeben hat. Schneide aus jedem Stück ein Dreieck in verschiedener Größe und Winkeln. Lege die Dreiecke auf den Hintergrund bis du mit der Anordnung zufrieden bist. Achte aber darauf, dass keine Kante der Dreiecke parallel läuft. Entferne das Papier, falls es noch vorhanden ist, und bügle die Dreiecke auf den Hintergrund. Verbinde den Hintergrund, das Vlies und die Rückseite in deiner bevorzugten Methode. 

Starting with one triangle draw lines an 1/8 inch inside the 3 edges elongating them to the ends of the background. From these ground lines measure 1 1/2 inch outside the triangle and continue to draw parallel lines until the whole background is covered. Quilt now along the lines in the color of the triangle. You'll sew over the other triangles, that's right.

Beginne mit einem Dreieck und zeichne eine Linie 2-3 mm von allen 3 Rändern nach innen und verlängere sie bis zum Ende des Hintergrundes. Von diesen Linien aus, markiere weitere Linien, vom Dreieck weg, im Abstand von 3,5 oder 4 cm bis der ganze Hintergrund voll ist. Quilte jetzt entlang der Linien mit dem farblich zum Dreieck passenden Faden. Das Übernähen der anderen Dreiecke ist in Ordnung.

Continue this technique with the remaining 3 triangles and the matching thread colors until the quilting lines look like chaos.

Wiederhole diese Schritte mit den anderen 3 Dreiecken und den dazu passenden Quiltfäden, bis die Quiltlinien nach Chaos aussehen.

You are ready to cut your piece straight and add the binding.

Der Quilt ist soweit fertig, um gerade geschnitten und eingefasst zu werden. 

Now begins the fun part. Take your paints and mix colors to get the colors of your leftovers. At least try to get near. Mix only one color at time, cause they tend to dry very quick. Avoid adding water or it will bleed. 

Look where the quilting lines form a triangle and color it. Don't paint into the fabric triangles. You can either color every bit of triangle you find or stop at a point where you think it's enough as I did. 

Nun beginnt der lustige Teil. Mische die Acrylfarben, so gut es geht, um die Farben der Dreiecke zu erhalten. Arbeite immer nur mit einer Farbe, da sie schnell trocknet. Vermeide die Farben mit Wasser zu verdünnen, da sie sonst in dem Stoff ausrinnen.

Schaue wo die Quiltlinien sich zu einem Dreieck treffen. Male es aus. Bemale keine Dreiecke die in die Stoffdreiecke reichen. Du kannst entweder alle Dreiecke ausmalen, die du findest, oder du stoppst an einem Punkt, wo du denkst es ist genug, wie ich es getan habe.

Mons & Kanjis are on the wall

It's nice to have another quilt leaving the Ufo pile and hanging on the wall. The Mons & Kanjis Quilt is done. 

Es ist schön wieder einen Quilt zu haben, der den Ufo Stoß verlassen hat und jetzt an der Wand hängt. Der Mons & Kanjis Quilt ist fertig.

Japanese Mons & Kanjis

The japanese Mons embroidery is done, the meanings are written under the Kanjis. Now how to quilt this piece? Maybe in the ditch and shells in the borders? Let's see with what I'll come up. 

Die japanischen Mons sind gestickt und die Bedeutung der Zeichen steht darunter geschrieben. Nun wie werde ich dieses Stück quilten? Vielleicht in der Naht und Halbkreise=Muscheln im Rand? Warten wir's ab was am Ende herauskommt. 

A fast Finish

Today I found a quilt in my Ufo pile which was almost done. All that was missing was a label on the back. I love this kind of Ufos and wished I had more of them instead those plain tops.

Heute fand ich in meinem Ufo Haufen einen Quilt, der fast fertig war. Alles was fehlte war das Label auf der Rückseite. Ich liebe diese Art von Ufos und wünschte ich hätte mehr solcher Exemplare anstatt nur einfache Tops.

Make Over of a WIP

In the last days I looked around in my Ufo closet and found another piece, which could need a pep up through embroidery. No idea how old it is. The top was already sandwiched and hand quilted in the ditch. 

In den letzten Tagen fand ich in meinem Ufo Kasten ein anderes Stück, das ein bisschen Aufpeppen durch Stickerei vertragen könnte. Keine Idee wie alt es ist. Das Top war bereits mit Vlies und Rückseite versehen und in den Nähten handgequiltet. 

Also a few squares were hand quilted with japanese motives. I decided to rip all out and start over. Of course it did hurt destroying my hand work, but if you want another result, you have to take the consequences. Goodbye nice hand stitches!

Auch ein paar Quadrate waren bereits mit japanischen Motiven gequiltet. Ich entschied mich dafür alle Stiche wieder aufzutrennen und von Neuem zu beginnen. Klar tat es weh meine Handarbeit zu zerstören, aber wenn du ein anderes Ergebnis willst, musst du die Konsequenzen tragen. Tschüß ihr schönen Handstiche.
