A Beautiful View

that's the title of my entry to the EQA challenge 2017. The theme for my country was "Inspired by the New York Beauty block". Since my visit back in 1983 I love New York City, and the song by Frank Sinatra is my favorite. So my first thought was, I have to show off this town in my quilt. My first design was a bit bumpy, but after a few nights sleep it developed.

Cause I could not find a better black/white picture I had not only to change to color, but also the perspective. That followed to make the blocks in black and grey tones to get enough contrast. I reduced the size of the blocks and elongated them to show more of the city.

Suddenly I had the idea with adding a zipper, kind of opening the view into the city. Thought - Done. The picture got printed on fabric and I could go on in putting it all together. Now the blocks remind me of the Chrysler Building, with its silver sparkling archs.

At last I had to add borders to get the giving size of 10 x 14 inch. The points and arcs I quilted in the ditch, sewed around the buildings and emphasized the sky with lines. The frame I let blank to give it a bit of calm.

Ciao Trentino

May was the month to spend a few days in Trentino, Italy.
It all started on May 7th and it was a long bus trip until we reached our destination, the Hotel Pippo in Terzolas.

The first look out of the hotel window was already impressive.

The next day was filled with a trip through the Dolomites. The weather showed all its facets, and the permanent ups and downs over passes and through valleys did not really calm down my nerves.

Here you can see the bad results of melting glaciers and global warming. The lake is drying out and even may be gone in a few years.

Before getting back in the hotel I had to take a photo from this tree in the neighborhood. It's a monkey tail tree, which I had never heard before nor seen. You can always learn something new.

Day 3 looked already more inviting. We took the train in Malé to reach Trento after about 1/2 hour. Unfortunately our tour guide was a runner and most of us could not keep up with him. So I did not get much information about this old and charming town. When the leftover group entered the cathedral, I was a little behind to take a quick photo of the Neptune fountain. The moment I wanted to connect, a priest closed the door, ignoring my protest, and I was left alone. So what to do? I sat down in one of the street cafes and ate a huge cup of delicious Italian ice cream.

Was also tun?

In the afternoon the bus led us over the Mendola Pass to South Tyrol with its famous towns Bolzano and Merano. The landscape there was sure worth more than one look.

Wednesday, May 10th: Today we went to Tirano, where the Glacier Express brought us over the Bernina Pass to St. Moritz. We were promised to stay for 20 min. at the pass to take photos, but the conductor did not keep word. Instead we had a 5 min. stop at a railway station far down. The many voltage did not allow for nice pictures. So I could only take some pics out of the riding train.

St. Moritz and the lake, very windy and a sleepy place at this time of the year. Ski season is over and all closed. Although we didn't let go and had our coffee and self made cake in the slipstream of the bus.

The next day was expected with joy by all of us. We were driving south to the Lake Garda. There were again many passes to pass, but after the last one a new world opened. Trentino had offered apples and wine in all kinds. Now we could look at palm and olive trees, lemon and orange trees. Even Kiwis are growing there.

Sogar Kiwis wachsen hier.

The Boat tour from Riva to Limone was cold, windy and foggy. Back to Riva we preferred to stay inside and not on the deck.

If you think now Limone is named after that yellow fruit, you are wrong. It came from Limes, the Latin word for border. Although this small village is offering all you can imagine made out of lemons. My only buy was a thimble for my collection, to take at least one item of remembrance home.

Back in Riva, we waved one more time to the Lago di Garda, named after a mermaid, as far as the story tells.

It's time to say Arrivederci Trentino. We say Goodbye to the snow covered glaciers and the moon, who early in the morning was still to see at the sky. It was again a beautiful trip with many new impressions, interesting stories and Italian food (noodles in all variations), which made my scale at home groaning. At least mine!

At the Quay

about 17,5 x 17,5 inch ( ca. 45 x 45 cm)

It began last week with a bargain fabric napkin and the embroidery pattern by ABC Embroidery, called Old City. From there it took it's own life when I added frames, using only thread. Therefore the piece would also go as a Wholecloth quilt.

During the sewing process I made pictures from every step to see if it worked out as I wanted. Maybe you would als like to see how this quilt evolved by looking at the pics below.

Plain Napkin, can you see the "woven in" frame? I used it as a guideline, but had to learn it was not square! Of course I ripped open and cut away the wavy edges.

The first frame was just lines with the distance getting wider to the outside.

The next frame was a 1 inch grid. Also I added a inner frame line to the motive to have it more outstanding.

The frame lines looked somewhat boring to me, so I added more lines and defined the corners.

Not satisfied with the result, I stippled the inner frame and gave the grid a 3D look. Fortunately I found color matching fabric for the binding in my stash.

Now you could follow my train of thoughts from a plain napkin to a finished quilt.
