Carnivale di Venezia

Now it's official and I can show pictures of my 2016 Riley Blake challenge adventure. 
It all began in February when I received the fabric piece which had to be used in a quilt, allowed only solids to add. 

Nun ist es offiziell und ich darf die Bilder meines diesjährigen Mitmach-Abenteuers herzeigen. Es begann im Februar als das Stück Stoff einlangte, das nur mit Ergänzung einfärbiger Stoffe für einen Quilt verwendet werden musste. 

The black/white pattern reminded me of the costume of clowns and the idea to make something related to the Venetian carneval was born. Here is my drawing on paper.

Das schwarz/weiss Muster erinnerte mich an ein Clownkostüm und damit war die Idee, etwas in Zusammenhang mit dem Karneval in Venedig zu machen, geboren. Hier ist mein Entwurf auf Papier.

Meanwhile the deadline had been extended from end of April to May, 31. What a relief, as you know I had been away. Although it was high on time to cut into fabric and piece the top. The first unit was the embroidery and from there the piece created itself. 

Inzwischen wurde der Einsendeschluss von Ende April auf den 31. Mai verlängert. Welche Erleichterung, da ich doch auf Urlaub war. Trotzdem war es höchste Zeit in die Stoffe zu schneiden und das Top zusammenzusetzen. Die erste Einheit war das Stickbild und von da an wuchs das Teil wie von alleine zusammen. 

The masks got colored with paint and machine appliqued, also the gondola (in the picture still a paper template).

Die Masken wurden bemalt und mit der Maschine appliziert, ebenso die Gondel (im Bild noch eine Papierschablone).

I would have liked to do a more detailed quilting, but time was running fast und didn't let me do so. Therefore it's only a stippling pattern with a few masks between. 

Ich hätte gern mehr Details gequilted, aber die Zeit rannte davon und ließ es nicht zu. Daher ist der Quilt nur, mit ein paar Masken dazwischen, gestippelt.

Yesterday I did the embellishment und today I glued down a few hundred Swarovski crystals to simulate confetti. The picture above is taken without flash to show the quilting. The picture below is taken with a flash to see the confetti and details.

Gestern habe ich noch die Verzierungen angebracht und heute ein paar hundert Swarovski Steinchen aufgeklebt, die Confetti darstellen sollen. Das obige Foto ist ohne Blitz gemacht um das Quilten zu sehen. Das Foto darunter ist geblitzt um das Konfetti und die Details besser zu zeigen. 

Today at "High Noon" I submitted my entrance to the MQG and I think I am done this year with challenges. 

Heute Mittag habe ich mein Teilnahmeformular an die MQG übermittelt und ich glaube dieses Jahr habe ich genug von Herausforderungen.

My trip to Carinthia

Last week I joined a bus trip to Carinthia, in the south of Austria. The weather was as nasty as could be, but it couldn't do any harm to our good spirits. The first day we drove up the Grossglockner, one of our highest mountains. It was a pity that rain and fog covered the points of the glaciers. Although we enjoyed having a snowball fight at the empty park lots. 

Letzte Woche schloss ich mich einer Busfahrt nach Kärnten an. Das Wetter war so mies wie es nur sein konnte, aber das konnte unseren Spaß nicht trüben. Am 1. Tag fuhren wir auf den Großglockner, einen unserer höchsten Berge. Es war schade, dass der Regen und Nebel die Spitzen der Gletscher verdeckte. Trotzdem lieferten wir uns auf dem leeren Parkplatz eine Schneeballschlacht.

The small village Heiligenblut with it's famous church is the start/end point of the Panorama Road.

Das kleine Dorf Heiligenblut mit seiner bekannten Kirche ist der Beginn, bzw. das Ende der Hochalpenstraße.

The evening was covered by a cruise around the Ossiacher Lake with dinner and music on board. 

Am Abend gab es eine Schifffahrt auf dem Ossiacher See mit Abendessen und Musik. 

The second day we went over the south border. In Tarvis/Italy money changed the owner for pretty shoes, bags and other leather ware. Then over to Slovenia to admire the big ski jumping hills of Planica. This time our dinner was conducted by a performance of the "Oberkrainer" music group.

Am 2. Tag fuhren wir über die südliche Grenze. In Tarvis/Italien wurde Geld gegen Lederwaren getauscht. Dann ging es nach Slowenien, wo wir die riesigen Skisprunganlagen in Planica bewundern konnten. Unser Abendessen wurde diesmal von den Oberkrainern begleitet. 

Up, up and away, the bus found it's way to the Malta reservoir, which is called Valley of the rushing water with it's hundreds of small and big waterfalls. I was totally scared during driving up and down the narrow curves and sloping road, avoided to look out of the window and hugged the seat before me. Maybe if the weather would have played nice it would not have been that bad. The glass of Schnaps at the end of the trip was well taken and deserved!

Auf und davon, ging es mit dem Bus zum Malta Stausee, auch Tal der stürzenden Wasser genannt, auf Grund der hunderten von kleinen und großen Wasserfällen. Während der Fahrt durch die engen Kehren und die steile Strasse war ich total gestresst, vermied aus dem Fenster zu schauen und umarmte den Sitz vor mir. Bei besserem Wetter wäre es vielleicht nicht so beängstigend gewesen. Das Stamperl Schnaps am Ende der Fahrt habe ich gerne genommen und auch verdient! 

Our last day before going back home was filled with a tour through the Hirter Brewery, which served us lunch and a free glass of beer. The next stay was at the Cathedral of Gurk and a visit to the Castle of Hochosterwitz. I prefered to stay at the entrance, spending money at the tourist shop and eating a yummy ice cream, instead of climbing up the hill to see old bricks and rusty arms. On the way back to the hotel in Sattendorf we drove along many of the well known Carinthian lakes. 

Unser letzter Tag vor der Heimreise führte uns in die Hirter Brauerei, wo wir ein Mittagessen mit einem Gratisbier bekamen. Der nächste Aufenthalt war im Gurker Dom und anschließend ein Besuch der Burg Hochosterwitz. Ich bevorzugte es beim Eingang zu bleiben, Geld im Touristenshop auszugeben und ein köstliches Eis zu essen, anstatt den Berg hinauf zu klettern um altes Gemäuer und rostige Rüstungen zu sehen. Den Weg zurück ins Hotel in Sattendorf fuhren wir entlang einiger der bekannten Kärntner Seen. 

On the trip back we made a side step to the Wörthersee, driving through the county capital Klagenfurt, Velden with it's Casino and Maria Wörth with it's small church on a peninsula. At Griffen, a highway station we had a delicious lunch (yes, it was) before we arrived home, tired out, in the evening. 

Although the weather was bad I had a nice and enjoyable trip with 46 other like-minded persons over 60y+, who behaved sometimes like crazy kids. 

Auf dem Weg zurück machten wir einen Abstecher zum Wörthersee, fuhren durch die Landeshauptstadt Klagenfurt, Velden mit seinem Kasino und nach Maria Wörth mit der kleinen Kirche auf der Halbinsel. Auf der Raststation Griffen hatten wir ein ausgezeichnetes Mittagessen (ja, wirklich) bevor wir am Abend müde zu Hause ankamen.

Obwohl das Wetter schlecht war, war es ein netter Ausflug mit 46 Gleichgesinnten über 60, die sich zeitweise wie verrückte Kinder benahmen.

Wave Bag Variation

You won't believe, but I have already finished another cover bag. I changed the edge a bit, using my wave ruler for marking. It's really fun to sew these bags. At least I have now 4 different outfits. I may sew another inside bag in a neutral color, which will give me endless possibilities. 

Ihr werdet es nicht glauben, aber ich habe bereits noch eine Außentasche genäht. Den Rand habe ich diesmal ein bißchen verändert, indem ich mein Wellenlineal zum Markieren verwendet habe. Es macht wirklich Spass diese Taschen zu nähen. Zumindest habe ich jetzt 4 verschiedene Variationen. Wahrscheinlich werde ich noch eine Innentasche in einer neutralen Farbe nähen, was die Austauschmöglichkeiten unendlich macht. 

Versatile Wave Bag

Two weeks ago I ordered a bag pattern from USA and this week it arrived. It's the Versatile Wave Bag by Ruthann Stilwell. Of course, after reading the instructions I had to start immediately. But as we all know, before starting there is the big question what fabrics to use. This time I was lucky to make a fast decision by choosing fabrics from the series Eclectic by Tim Holtz.

Vor 2 Wochen bestellte ich in Amerika einen Taschenschnitt und diese Woche kam er an. Es handelt sich um die Versatile Wave Tasche von Ruthann Stilwell. Nach dem Durchlesen der Anleitung musste ich natürlich sofort beginnen. Aber wie wir alle wissen, kommt vorher die Frage nach den Stoffen. Diesmal konnte ich mich schnell für Stoffe von der Serie Eclectic von Tim Holtz entscheiden. 

The Basic Purse was quick done by quilting straight lines, putting in a zipper and making boxed corners. And yes, it has a lining and inner pockets too.

Die Basis Tasche war schnell genäht. Gerade Linien gequiltet, einen Reissverschluss eingenäht und die Ecken abgenäht. Natürlich gefüttert und mit Innentaschen.

The turnable cover bag was more work. The fabrics were cut in shape with the included template, also the heavy interfacing. Sewing together the wavy seam without catching the interfacing was a bit tricky and I almost forgot to add the loops. My machine had to give its best, sewing through the thick seams, but now it's done and I am more than happy with the result. In my accessories box I found a pair of faux leather handles which matched perfect, although I couldn't remember to have bought them. This safed me from spending time to sew handles. 

Die umdrehbare Außentasche war mehr Arbeit. Der Stoff und das aufbügelbare feste Vlies wurden nach dem beigefügten Schnittmuster zugeschnitten. Den Wellensaum zu nähen, ohne das Vlies mitzufassen war etwas trickreich und ich vergaß beinahe die Schlaufen mitzufassen, aber jetzt ist es fertig und ich bin mit dem Ergebniß mehr als zufrieden. In meiner Zubehörschachtel fand ich fertige Henkel aus unechtem Leder, die perfekt dazu passten. Ich kann mich zwar nicht erinnern, wann ich sie kaufte, aber sie ersparten mir Zeit welche zu nähen. 

I'll be sure making more of these bags, cause I love the interchangeable possibilities.

Ich werde sicher noch mehr solcher Taschen nähen, weil ich die vielen Austauschmöglichkeiten toll finde. 

EQA Quilt 2016 finished

It's done!!! My little EQA quilt is finished and waiting to go in mail to the president of the Austrian Quiltguild. As promised here is the explanation of the pictures, which should represent a bit of my country.

Es ist geschafft!!! Mein kleiner EQA Quilt is fertig und wartet darauf zu unserer Gildepräsidentin geschickt zu werden. Ich erspare mir eine Erklärung der Bilder auf Deutsch, da sie für sich sprechen.

EQA Quilt in Progress

After sewing the fabric pieces and pictures down to the base, this is what the top looks like now. There is still the stamp to add in the right upper corner and it also needs a bit of embellishment. I'll tell you the meaning of the pictures when I'm done.

So sieht das Top jetzt nach dem Aufnähen der Stoffteile und Bilder aus. Es fehlt noch die Marke in der rechten oberen Ecke und es braucht auch noch etwas zum Aufpeppen. Wenn der Quilt fertig ist, werde ich euch die Bedeutung der Bilder erklären.

EQA Quilt

It's high on time to work on my EQA Quilt for Birmingham - at least I hope it gets accepted - as the deadline is April 30th. The theme is Greetings from your Country and there has any kind of stamp to be on the front. I designed it a month ago and since then I made a few changes.

Es ist höchste Zeit an meinem EQA Quilt für Birmingham zu arbeiten - zumindest hoffe ich er wird angenommen - da der Anmeldetermin mit 30. April endet. Das Thema lautet Grüße aus deinem Land und es muss an der Vorderseite irgendeine Art von Marke zu sehen sein. Vor einem Monat machte ich bereits einen Entwurf, den ich aber seitdem ein paarmal geändert habe. 

Actually I swore last year not to take part any more, cause the quilts are not allowed to have a binding. I hate not doing a binding! But then the theme challenged me and I gave in. 

Eigentlich schwörte ich letztes Jahr nicht mehr teilzunehmen, da diese Quilts keine Einfassung haben dürfen. Ich hasse es nur zu verstürzen! Aber dann hat mich das Thema doch wieder herausgefordert und ich gab nach. 

So far I have now resized, printed and laminated the pictures, embroidered an Enzian and Edelweiss and the fabrics chosen. The fabrics are mainly Dirndl-fabrics, representing our traditional costume. 

Bis jetzt habe ich die Bilder verkleinert, ausgedruckt und laminiert, einen Enzian und ein Edelweiss gestickt und die Stoffe gewählt. Es sind hauptsächlich Dirndlstoffe, die unsere Nationaltracht repräsentieren.

Today I hope to get further by making the quilt sandwich and sewing the fabrics to the base. This step should be the quilting part at the same time.

Ich hoffe heute weiterzukommen, indem ich das Teil mit Rückseite und Vlies unterlege und die Stoffteile auf den Basisstoff nähe. Damit wird das Top auch gleich gequiltet.
