A Beautiful View

that's the title of my entry to the EQA challenge 2017. The theme for my country was "Inspired by the New York Beauty block". Since my visit back in 1983 I love New York City, and the song by Frank Sinatra is my favorite. So my first thought was, I have to show off this town in my quilt. My first design was a bit bumpy, but after a few nights sleep it developed. 

das ist der Titel meines Quilts für die EQA Ausschreibung 2017. Das Thema für mein Land war diesmal " Inspiriert durch den New York Beauty Block". Bei meinem Besuch in New York City in 1983 habe ich mich sofort in die Stadt verliebt und das Lied von Frank Sinatra ist seither nicht mehr aus meinem Kopf zu bringen. Daher war mein erster Gedanke, ich muss diese Stadt in meinem Quilt zeigen. Mein erster Entwurf war ein wenig holperig, aber nach ein paar Nächten Schlaf entwickelte es sich. 

Cause I could not find a better black/white picture I had not only to change to color, but also the perspective. That followed to make the blocks in black and grey tones to get enough contrast. I reduced the size of the blocks and elongated them to show more of the city. 

Da ich kein besseres schwarz/weiß Foto finden konnte, musste ich nicht nur auf Farbe wechseln, sondern auch die Perspektive. Daraus folgte, dass die Blöcke jetzt in Schwarz und Grau waren, um mehr Kontrast zu bekommen. Ich verkleinerte auch die Blöcke und zog sie in die Länge, damit mehr von der Stadt zu sehen ist.

Suddenly I had the idea with adding a zipper, kind of opening the view into the city. Thought - Done. The picture got printed on fabric and I could go on in putting it all together. Now the blocks remind me of the Chrysler Building, with its silver sparkling archs. 

Plötzlich hatte ich die Idee mit dem Reissverschluss, eine Art Öffnung um in die Stadt reinzuschauen. Gedacht - Getan. Das Bild wurde auf Stoff gedruckt und ich konnte endlich alles zusammensetzen. Nun erinnern mich die Blöcke an das Chrysler Gebäude mit seinen silber glänzenden Bögen. 

At last I had to add borders to get the giving size of 10 x 14 inch. The points and arcs I quilted in the ditch, sewed around the buildings and emphasized the sky with lines. The frame I let blank to give it a bit of calm. 

Zum Schluss musste ich noch einen Rand annähen um auf die geforderte Größe von 25 x 35 cm zu kommen. Die Blöcke habe ich in der Naht gequiltet, um die Gebäude herum genäht und den Himmel mit Linien betont. Den Rand habe ich so gelassen, um dem Ganzen ein bisschen Ruhe zu geben.
