In April I finished again an old Ufo from 2003. Originally it ended at the blue border, but I had enough fabric left and therefore decided to add another round. 

Im April wurde wieder eine altes Ufo von 2003 fertig. Eigentlich endete es beim blauen Rand, aber ich hatte noch genügend Stoff und entschied mich daher für eine weitere Runde. 

To underline the title, I appliqued two champagne glasses using tulle and sequins for the sparkle.

Um den Titel zu unterstreichen, applizierte ich noch zwei Sektgläser aus Tüll und ein paar Pailletten als aufsteigende Perlen.

Lorenza's Poppies

11 months ago I dug out this Ufo from 2001. So far I know it was a Mysteryquilt, but I don't remember the site it came from. Having no idea how the pattern would turn out, I chose for the asked fabrics 3 shades of grey. Of course I had to give it a bit more color by adding a small red border. Looking at the top this was not enough. So I asked my quilting friends for an applique pattern, preferred a poppy. Lorenza from Italy was so kind to send me a pattern and I hand appliqued it, using batiks. Then the top came onto my Ufo pile. 

Vor 11 Monaten habe ich dieses Ufo aus 2001 wieder ausgegraben. So weit ich weiß war es ein Mysteryquilt, aber ich kann mich nicht mehr an die Seite erinnern, wo ich ihn fand. Da ich keine Idee hatte welches Muster genäht wird, entschied ich mich laut der Vorgabe für 3 Grautöne. Natürlich brauchte es ein bisschen mehr Farbe und daher entschied ich mich für die Zugabe des schmalen roten Rands. Aber damit war ich noch nicht zufrieden. Also fragte ich meine Quiltfreunde, ob jemand eine Appliziervorlage für mich hat, bevorzugt eine Mohnblume. Lorenza aus Italien war dann so nett mir ein dementsprechendes Muster zu schicken und ich habe es unter Verwendung von Batikstoffen mit der Hand appliziert. Dann wanderte das Teil zu den anderen Ufos. 

It took almost 18 years to get it quilted and finished. Although I am glad for the long period, as of today I have learned and added so much to my quilting skills.

I still wanted to give the poppies more glow and gave them the final touch by hand embroidering the outside with black floss. Now I am happy with the result and that there is one Ufo less on my To Do list.

Es hat jetzt beinahe 18 Jahre gedauert bis der Quilt fertig war. Aber eigentlich bin ich dankbar für die lange Zeitspanne, da ich bis heute viel über Quiltmuster und Möglichkeiten dazugelernt habe. Ich wollte die Mohnblumen noch immer mehr hervorheben und das gelang mir mit einer schwarzen, handgenähten, Einrahmung.

Nun bin ich mit dem Endergebnis zufrieden und froh, dass ein Ufo weniger auf meiner To Do Liste ist.

Not the usual Quilt As You Go

This quilt I made about 10 years ago for a class, but somehow it never got a binding and was thrown on the Ufo pile. I knew there was still enough left from the border fabric, but where? Last week I finally found it and the binding is now on. 

Diesen Quilt habe ich vor ca. 10 Jahren für einen Kurs genäht, aber aus mir nicht erinnerbaren Gründen bekam er nie eine Einfassung. Ich wusste, dass von dem roten Stoff noch genügend da ist, aber wo? Letzte Woche ist er dann plötzlich aufgetaucht und jetzt ist der Quilt endlich eingefasst.

The quilt was sewn with another kind of Quilt as you go, called the Betty Cotton Theory. There are meanwhile 2 books out on the market, explaining this method. In short: The top and back pieces are cut with a 1 inch seam allowance, but the batting in the finished size. The top and back edges are sewn together at once, seams pressed open. The top seam is cut back to 1/4 inch and the back seam wrapped around it to cover the raw edge. Then you stitch from top over the seam with a zig-zag or fancy stitch to catch and step down the covered seams.

Der Quilt ist mit einer anderen Art von Quilt as you go Technik genäht, der sogenannten Betty Cotton Theory. Einstweilen sind 2 Bücher erschienen, die diese Methode erklären. In Kurz: Die Teile für die Oberseite und Rückseite werden mit einer Saumzugabe von 1 inch zugeschnitten, das Vlies nur in der fertigen Größe. Die Kanten werden gemeinsam zusammengenäht und der Saum auseinander gebügelt. Der Saum der Oberseite wird auf 1/4 inch zurück geschnitten und mit dem Saum der Rückseite eingewickelt. Dann wird von der Oberseite mit einem Zickzack- oder Zierstich über die Naht genäht, um den Saum auf der Rückseite festzusteppen.

Starry Night

Today I finished another Ufo, back from 2009, when the Hype with Ricky Tims Kool Kaleidoscope pattern was in full bloom. This is my second Kaleidoscope. A third one, sewn with Batiks, is still on the Ufo pile. I had already quilted the blue center, but then it seems, I lost interest. Last week I pushed myself to continue and now I am glad it's done. Although blue is not my color and I seldom use so much of it, I like how it worked out. 

Heute habe ich es geschafft ein Ufo aus dem Jahr 2009 fertig zu stellen. Damals war gerade Ricky Tims Kool Kaleidoscope voll im Trend und ich musste es natürlich auch versuchen. Es ist der 2. Quilt dieser Art und ein dritter, aus Batikstoffen, wartet auch noch. Das blaue Mittelteil war bereits gequiltet, aber dann verlor ich scheinbar das Interesse. Letzte Woche habe ich mich dann selbst gezwungen, daran weiter zu arbeiten und jetzt bin ich froh, dass der Quilt fertig geworden ist. Obwohl Blau nicht meine Farbe ist und ich sie daher selten verwende, gefällt mir das Ergebnis.

Mons & Kanjis are on the wall

It's nice to have another quilt leaving the Ufo pile and hanging on the wall. The Mons & Kanjis Quilt is done. 

Es ist schön wieder einen Quilt zu haben, der den Ufo Stoß verlassen hat und jetzt an der Wand hängt. Der Mons & Kanjis Quilt ist fertig.

A fast Finish

Today I found a quilt in my Ufo pile which was almost done. All that was missing was a label on the back. I love this kind of Ufos and wished I had more of them instead those plain tops.

Heute fand ich in meinem Ufo Haufen einen Quilt, der fast fertig war. Alles was fehlte war das Label auf der Rückseite. Ich liebe diese Art von Ufos und wünschte ich hätte mehr solcher Exemplare anstatt nur einfache Tops.

Make Over of a WIP

In the last days I looked around in my Ufo closet and found another piece, which could need a pep up through embroidery. No idea how old it is. The top was already sandwiched and hand quilted in the ditch. 

In den letzten Tagen fand ich in meinem Ufo Kasten ein anderes Stück, das ein bisschen Aufpeppen durch Stickerei vertragen könnte. Keine Idee wie alt es ist. Das Top war bereits mit Vlies und Rückseite versehen und in den Nähten handgequiltet. 

Also a few squares were hand quilted with japanese motives. I decided to rip all out and start over. Of course it did hurt destroying my hand work, but if you want another result, you have to take the consequences. Goodbye nice hand stitches!

Auch ein paar Quadrate waren bereits mit japanischen Motiven gequiltet. Ich entschied mich dafür alle Stiche wieder aufzutrennen und von Neuem zu beginnen. Klar tat es weh meine Handarbeit zu zerstören, aber wenn du ein anderes Ergebnis willst, musst du die Konsequenzen tragen. Tschüß ihr schönen Handstiche.

So far I have embroidered 10 squares with japanese Mons, 6 more to go. Stay tuned for new photos in the next days.

Dear Jane

Yesterday I digged out a top from 2001. It's made from 9 Dear Jane blocks and a 20x20 inch square. Looks like I picked out the stars from the 169 blocks. The red fabric had small bamboo leaves and twigs printed, which leaded to the oriental pattern. For years I wanted to add either a matching applique, or a panel or even a kimono fabric, if I would have been able to find some. Then a few months ago I discovered these machine embroidery patterns and the decision was made. Although it lasted until now to get started. 

Gestern habe ich ein Top aus 2001 ausgegraben. Es besteht aus 9 Dear Jane Blöcken und einem 50x50cm Quadrat. Wie es aussieht, dürfte ich aus den 169 Blöcken die Sterne rausgesucht haben. Der rote Stoff zeigt kleine Bambusblätter und Zweige, der Grund für das orientalische Muster. Seit Jahren wollte ich entweder passende Applikationen, oder ein Panel, oder sogar einen Kimonostoff verwenden, vorausgesetzt ich hätte so etwas gefunden. Dann, vor ein paar Monaten, entdeckte ich diese Stickmuster und die Entscheidung war gefallen. Trotzdem habe ich erst jetzt damit angefangen. 

In the meantime I have added some embroidery. I had to resize, mirror and rotate the patterns to fit them properly. There are still some birds and water lines missing, but time will show. It just needs time and patience to finish a quilt. 

Inzwischen habe ich bereits ein paar Muster gestickt. Ich musste die Größen ändern, spiegeln und drehen, damit es passt. Es fehlen noch immer ein paar Vögel und Wasserlinien, aber es wird schon werden. Es braucht eben Zeit und Geduld um wieder einen Quilt fertig zu bekommen.
